Description: Newtons Cradle

  • Demonstrates the rules of the conservation of momentum and energy. If you swing one ball onto the others, only the last one moves.

Newton's Cradle is physics that you can touch! It demonstrates, in a fascinating way, the rules of the conservation of momentum and energy in a mechanical system.

In a Newton's Cradle like this one, five equal balls hang in a frame side by side. Each ball is a pendulum, and if you lift one of the outer balls and then let it swing against the other four, something astonishing happens. The four balls don't all move when hit, as common sense might tell you. Instead, the three balls in the middle stay almost completely calm while the fifth on the other side swings out as high as the first ball does!

This reaction is due to an effect called the elastic impulse transmission. Because the balls are made from a solid material, the energy of the first ball is transmitted through the others to the last ball. This ball on the end moves because there is no other ball to which it can transmit the energy.

The effect of the Newton's Cradle is even more fascinating when you lift up two or more balls at once. The same number of balls lifted up on one side moves on the other side. You can learn more about it in this.

With the Newton's Cradle, you can experience physics in your own home and explain the effects to your children in a vivid way. A Newton's Cradle is essential to every geek household!
