OMG, AFAIK almost everyone now uses abbreviations in RL that actually originate from IRC or the chat scene. Sometimes, for example, noobs 'ROFL' because someone else said LOL.
"WTF" one would have thought a few years ago if someone had said that the 1337 language would make it out of your box. IMHO, however, a funny change alongside Denglisch.
