It could also be that tree beings have poor eyesight. Because Mario has sneakily disguised himself as a Tanuki, a Japanese raccoon dog, and at first glance looks similar to Rocket, the space raccoon. With glasses, the little guy in the flowerpot would surely have seen that he is falling for a fraudster. Well, at least Mario left a carnivorous plant as a "replacement"...
