To survive in battle, you need the right equipment. Knights and soldiers in the Middle Ages knew this too. They often carried a sword in one hand to attack the opponent or ward off his blows, and a shield in the other hand, which offered additional protection from the opponent's blade or could also be used as a weapon.

Both shield and sword were absolutely lethal weapons. The loser of a fight was therefore often killed. And the winner usually only had a short life without his heroic deeds with sword and shield ever being reported.
