With the potato clock, you will never have to rely on conventional batteries or electricity from the socket again - at least not to find out what time it is.

Perhaps you still remember your first physics construction kit, with which you could generate electricity for a small light bulb from various fruits? The potato clock works in exactly the same way, except that you can operate a working digital clock instead of a weak lamp. The potato battery

is the classic, but you can also use apples, lemons or drinks to generate electricity.

The set-up is very simple, in addition to the set you only need two fresh potatoes or another vegetable or fruit of your choice. Now all you need to do is connect the copper and zinc strips from the set to the clock and the potato using a cable and voilà: electricity will flow.

The way this galvanic experiment works is just as simple: as copper and zinc have different redox potentials, the less noble zinc gives off electrons to the more noble copper. This makes the zinc strips the negative pole and the copper strips the positive pole (electrodes). The potato itself becomes the electrolyte by providing a conductive solution. The formula for this galvanic experiment is as follows: Cu2+ + Zn → Cu + Zn2+. In total, a voltage of approx. 1 volt is produced.

In addition to the digital clock itself, cables, copper and zinc strips, the set also contains two beakers that can be used to make a battery from salt water or lemon juice, for example.

By the way: the fruit used should not be eaten later.

P.s. If you plan to use the clock permanently, e.g. on your bedside table, it is advisable to replace it regularly due to any rotting processes that may occur on the potato ;)
